Garland L. Canter, a retired Sergeant of the Troy Police Department, passed away Thursday, January 28, 2016 at the age of 70 after a long illness. He was born April 30, 1945 in Jackson County, OH to the late Wilbur and Ruby (Davis) Canter.

He is survived by and will be extremely and sadly missed by son and daughter-in-law Todd and Terri Canter of Piqua, and daughter and son-in-law Michelle "Shelley" and Scott Parker of Troy. Also surviving are grandchildren Kelsey and Cameron Smith of Troy, and step grandson John of Piqua, as well as great-granddaughter Addison, and step great-grandson Parker.

Other survivors include sisters and brothers-in-law Carolyn and Dale Neal of Jackson County, OH, and Imogene "Jeanie" and Norm Plantz of Troy. Niece and nephews Scott Plantz of Troy, Chad and Amy Plantz of Arizona, Rod Neal of Dayton, and Robin and Don Wilson of Columbus, great niece and great-nephews Nick and Alex Plantz of Arizona, Lauren and Griffin Wilson of Columbus.

Preceding him in death is his wife of 39 years, Linda, and sister Patricia "Pat" Canter, who passed June 30, 2015.

Garland was a 1964 graduate of Troy High School, and took many college courses at Sinclair Community College and Case Western University pertaining to his profession. He retired from the Troy Police Department as Sergeant, and was an excellent marksman, winning many first place trophies while representing the Troy Police Department. He was also a certified scuba diver, using his expertise when needed. His hobbies included fishing, competitive shooting, woodworking, and he especially loved building racecars and racing. When his health permitted, he attended Ginghamsburg Church in Tipp City.

A funeral service will be held 4:30PM Saturday February 6, 2016 at Fisher-Cheney Funeral Home, Troy. Friends may call from 1:00PM-4:30PM in the funeral home. Interment Monday February 8, 2016 at Riverside Cemetery, Troy.
