John Edgar Lutz, age 81 of Troy, passed away Saturday, September 12, 2026 at Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy. He was born January 11, 1945 in Troy to the late Robert Edward and Esther Josephine (Elking) Lutz.

John was married to Kathleen Rae “Kay” (Remley) Lutz and she preceded him in death on December 28, 2025. He was also preceded in death by their children Steven Wayne Swartz, Timothy Michael Lutz, and Tammy Rene (Gulley) Lutz. Others since passed include his siblings Robert E. Lutz, Jr., Lawrence Lutz, Thomas Lutz, Mary Kay Lutz, Fred Lutz, Edd Lutz, and Theresa Burrows.

John’s memory will be cherished by his children Jeffrey Daniel Swartz (Candis) of Troy, Robert Wade Swartz (Penny) of Sun City West, AZ, Terri Lynn (Lutz) Brown of Minster, and Thomas Patrick Lutz (Deanna) of Lombard, IL; his siblings Paul Lutz of Cincinnati, Louanne Burke of Katy, TX, Rosemarie Davis (Dick) of Union, Rita Knowles of North Carolina, and Linda DeMange (Dave) of Piqua; as well as 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A lifelong Troy resident, John graduated from Troy High School in 1962 before enlisting in the US Navy and served our country with two tours in Vietnam from 1969-1970. John was a dedicated member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Piqua. John retired with the UA Local #162, Dayton, where he was a member for 63 years. He was a tester for the American Temperament Testing Society and a member of the BPO Elks #833 in Troy where he served as treasurer for 13 years and trustee for 7 years. He was also a member of American Legion Post #43, Troy, Echo Kennel Club, Troy, First Families of Miami County, and Friends of Hayner.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30AM Friday, September 25, 2026 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Piqua with Father Steve Shoup officiating. There will be visiting hours at Fisher-Cheney Funeral Home from 9:00AM-10:00AM before Mass. Friends and family are also welcome at the funeral home from 5:00PM-7:00PM Thursday, September 24, 2026 with an Elks Lodge of Sorrow service at 7:00PM. Interment will be held in Riverside Cemetery, Troy. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Last Dollar Grant at The Future Begins Today in memory of John’s wife, Kay. Arrangements entrusted to Fisher-Cheney Funeral Home, Troy.
