John Joseph Smekens, age 84 of Troy, passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at Hospice of Miami Valley, Troy. He was born on June 25, 1938 in Wells County, Bluffton, IN to the late Clement and Martha (Kelley) Smekens.

In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his parents; siblings Jane Waters and Joel Smeken; and his fiancé, Marilyn Headford, who passed away in 2016.

Those left to cherish John's memory include his fiancé children, Marilyn Vaughn of Troy, OH, Susan (John) Stilwell of Crystal River, FL, and Carol (Randy) Prudden of Eaton, OH; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; a brother, Michael Smekens, of Bluffton, Indiana and a sister, Suzie (Gary) Studebaker of Palm Harbor, FL.

John is also survived by his children Debbie Gaunt of Ossian, Indiana, Dean Smekens of Fort Wayne, Indiana and David Smekens of Bluffton, Indiana; and seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

John graduated from Bluffton High School with the class of 1956 and served in the U.S. Navy immediately following graduation. He also worked for many years as a photographer before retirement. John loved golf.
