Jerome Schmidt Obituary

Jerome Theodore Schmidt, age 77 of Sidney, passed away Monday, October 22, 2018 at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton. He was born November 14, 1940 in Bertha, Minnesota to the late Theodore and Erna (Roch) Schmidt.

Jerome is survived by his wife Hope (Jensen) Schmidt, whom he married in 1990; sons Jim Fox of Tipp City, Jordan Fox (Melanie) of Tipp City, and David Schmidt (Lori) of Mikado, MI; daughters Becki Schmidt Pildner (Bob) of Longmont, CO and Ruth Schmidt MacNeill (Kevin) of St. Charles, MI and their mother Marie Schmidt of Hemlock, MI; five grandchildren: Joshua Fox, Jordan Fox, Jr., Jason Fox, Jacob Fox, and Peyton Harvey; brother James Schmidt (Laura) of Saginaw, MI; and sisters Elaine Drevlow of Escanaba, MI and LuAnn LaPierre of Saginaw, MI; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Jerome grew up in Minnesota and moved to Michigan with his parents when he was a young boy. He was a devout Christian and served his Lord in many ways throughout his life and more recently as a Pastor at Hardin United Methodist Church. He was a US Army Veteran serving his country in the Army National Guard.  As a devoted young dad, he loved working with the area youth and his children as a longtime 4H Leader and baseball coach.  Jerry enjoyed camping, boating, waterskiing, hunting and fishing, watching Detroit Tigers baseball and was an excellent gardener. As a musician and singer, he enjoyed playing the guitar and accordion with other musicians including his father, brother, sisters, and other friends and family members since he was a youngster. He loved watching those good old cowboy Westerns on TV, listening to country music, keeping horses and horseback riding. Jerry was a gifted handyman and could fix or build nearly anything.  He found happiness in helping people and there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for someone in need.  Jerry and his wife Hope fostered many children in the Miami County area and through SAFY in Sidney. He retired from Teamsters trucking after 42 years of service and was also a dedicated school bus driver for Hardin Houston Schools.
