Kenneth Cornell Thorpe, age 88 of Troy, passed away Friday, July 3, 2020 at Select Hospital in Columbus. He was born October 15, 1931 in Piqua to the late Willard Thorpe and Emma Belle Turner Thorpe.
Kenneth is survived by his daughter Cheryl Howard of Columbus; 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; brother Tom Cromwell of Zanesville; three sisters: Bernice Jackson of Dayton, Mary Kimbo of Sidney, and Courtney Medley (Paul) of Florida; as well as good friends Sonny Thomas of Springfield and Peggy Henthorne of Piqua.
He was preceded in death by his wife Salle (Ferguson) Thorpe in 2008, as well as brother Dorset Thorpe and sister Mildred Thorpe.
Kenneth was a US Army Veteran. He was a decorated athlete from Piqua High School Class of 1952 where he was voted All American and MVP in football and track, and was also inducted into the Piqua Indians Hall of Fame. To this day, Piqua High School awards a Kenneth C. Thorpe Scholarship in his honor. He went on to receive his Associate’s Degree from Ohio State University. He was a past Potentate from Shiner’s Club 41 in Springfield. Kenneth volunteered with the Salvation Army in Troy and retired from WPAFB after many years of service.
A graveside service will be held 2:30PM Friday, July 17, 2020 at Riverside Cemetery, Troy with Pastor Charles Carnes officiating. Military honors by the Veteran's Memorial Honor Guard of Troy will be conducted.
