Carl Phillis, Sr. Obituary

Carl David Phillis, Sr., age 99 of Springfield and formerly of Troy, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at Oakwood Village Senior Living in Springfield. He was born July 9, 1922 in Columbus to the late Carl R. and Mary Belle (nee Fourman) Phillis.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years Betty V. (nee Gump) Phillis, who passed away April 7, 1999; son Carl (Sharon) David Phillis, Jr.; 4 brothers, Cecil (Katherine) Phillis, Charles (Ann) Phillis, Clayton (Margaret) Phillis and Clifford (Laura) Phillis; sister, Charlene Thompson; brother-in-law, James Ellis; and 1 granddaughter and 1 great grandson.

Those left to cherish Carl’s memory include his daughter Linda Combs of Springfield, OH; sister Carolyn “Jane” Ellis of Broken Arrow, OK; brother-in-law Judson Thompson of Covington; as well as 8 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 29 great great-grandchildren.

Carl was a dedicated US Navy and Air Force veteran serving in WWII. He was a 1940 graduate of Piqua High School and attended Wittenburg University for two years. Carl attended Casstown United Methodist Church and was a former member of First United Methodist Church in Troy. He was a former member of Troy Elks #833, Loyal Order of the Moose #1044 in Troy, Piqua Eagles #614, Piqua Musicians Association, a life member of the Local 576 A. F&M, a member of the Hobart Milestone Club, and the Troy Evening Optimists. He worked for Hobart Brothers for 47 years as a Superintendent before retiring in 1987. He was a charter member of the Hobart men’s bowling and golf leagues. Carl was a lifetime fiddler; he was the 1948 Ohio State champion old time fiddler and voted the number 3 fiddler in the nation at the Kentucky State Fair. He was a professor of Blue Grass fiddle music at Sinclair College. Throughout the years, Carl has played in many bands including the Rum River Blend and God’s Country. He preformed at many nursing homes, churches and festivals.

A funeral service will be held at 11AM on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at Fisher-Cheney Funeral Home, Troy with Rev. David Ramming officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7PM on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at the funeral home. Interment will follow the funeral service at Casstown Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH 45420. Arrangements entrusted to Fisher-Cheney Funeral Home, Troy, OH.
